Roo's softball coach Para, players Olivares and Coppola receive top honors; six named All-Conference

(Canton, N.Y.)- SUNY Canton head coach Diane Para, senior first baseman Carolina Olivares (Adelanto, Calif.) and freshman shortstop Lyndsay Coppola (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) swept the three top honors from the Sunrise Conference and six members of the softball team were chosen for all-conference honors.?Para was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season, Olivares was named the Player of the Year, and Coppola was selected as the Rookie of the Year.  Joining Olivares and Coppola on the all-conference team for the second year in a row are senior centerfielder Jenifer Shaw (Helendale, Calif.), sophomore leftfielder Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.), sophomore pitcher Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.), and sophomore third baseman Vickie Lynch (Howard Beach, N.Y.).?Para guided the Roos to back-to-back regular season and conference championships and a berth in the NAIA national tournament in Alabama.  The Roos finished the regular season with an unblemished 10-0 conference mark and they are 18-13 overall heading into the national tournament.  They were a perfect 3-0 at the conference tournament at Regis College (Mass.) allowing just three runs in three games.

Olivares was one of the top hitters in the conference as she led the league in batting average (.537), total hits (51), RBIs (37), doubles (14), and triples (5).  She was tied for second with three home runs, and third in total runs scored with 30.

Coppola blasted a conference-leading nine home runs this spring and was second to Olivares with a .485 average.  She also led the conference in runs scored (41), and was second in total hits (50) and doubles (11), and third in RBIs (31).

Shaw was second in runs (33), tied for second in doubles (11) and home runs (3), fourth in RBIs (25), and fifth in hitting (.371).  Lottie tied Shaw with three home runs and was also second in RBIs (35), fourth in hits (35), fifth in doubles (10), and sixth in hitting (.365) and runs (22).  DeLuca led the conference in innings pitched (128.2) and wins (13), and was second in strikeouts (46), third in opponent’s batting average (.299), and fourth in earned-run average (5.49).  Lynch was fourth in runs (24), eighth in RBIs (17), 11th in doubles (4), and she batted .239 with 21 total hits.
