(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s soccer team picked up their second straight shutout on Saturday as they blanked SUNY ESF 2-0 in Canton.

Francesco Cardillo (Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored his second goal in as many days, Pat Connelly (Chittenango, N.Y.) was credited with a goal that went off a SUNY ESF defender, and the Roos defense prevented the Mighty Oaks from getting any shots on goal.

“It’s nice to see the things we are training on and practicing are working,” said head coach Mark Howlett. “Our back four is starting to gel and work well as a unit. This was another physical game tonight but our players kept their heads and came out with a great result.”

The Roos held a 13-2 advantage in overall shots as they peppered ESF’s defense and former SUNY Canton goalie Eamon Case with shots from a variety of spots around the field.

Cardillo put the Roos on top 1-0 six minutes into the opening half with his second score of the weekend. Ashley Butterworth (Broughton, Preston, United Kingdom) served a nice pass from the right wing after a SUNY ESF foul that bounced through the defense and right to the foot of Cardillo who wasted no time putting it past Case.  It was Butterworth’s second assist on the weekend.

The Roos second strike came in the 54th minute when Connelly lofted a shot towards goal that deflected off one of the SUNY ESF players.  It was Connelly’s first goal of the year.

Sansung Sillah (Bronx, N.Y.) started in goal for the Roos and thanks to a strong defensive front ahead of him was not called on to make a single save.  Case finished with three saves for ESF.

The Roos are next in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they play at SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m.
