(Long Island, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s soccer team tied second-ranked Briarcliffe College 2-2 Saturday afternoon in Long Island.
SUNY Canton built a 2-0 lead by halftime as Shane Powell (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Ashley Butterworth (Broughton, Preston, United Kingdom) each scored their first collegiate goals for the Roos.
The Seahawks, ranked second in the latest USCAA Coaches Poll, came back to tie the game in the final 25 minutes when they were awarded three penalty kicks. Roos’ goalie Sankung Sillah (Bronx, N.Y.), who transferred from Briarcliffe, stopped one of the three shots to keep the score at 2-2.
The game did not go to extra periods as there was a scheduling conflict with the field that Briarcliffe had rented, so the game ended in a tie at the end of regulation.
The Roos are next in action this Wednesday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Elmira College in a makeup game that was postponed by rain earlier this fall.
