(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team closed out the first semester with a 4-1 loss to the University of Rhode Island Saturday afternoon at Roos House.

SUNY Canton ends the first half of their season 5-11 overall and 2-2 on their home ice.

The Roos dominated the opening stanza on Saturday as they outshot the Rams 19-3 in the first 20 minutes but managed to come away with just a 1-0 lead after one period. Sophomore Dave Ferris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) netted his first goal of the season when he tallied a power play goal at the 9:53 mark of the first from sophomore Trevor Wight (Clearwater, Fla.). For the game the Roos held a 44-18 advantage in shots.

Rhode Island countered with two goals in the second period as Robbie Buerherer tied the game 1-1following a rebound off a two-on-one break and an initial save from sophomore Morgan Barr (Almonte, Ontario) at the 5:32 mark and then Mike Tait put the Rams ahead for good as he knocked the puck past Barr following a scrum out in front of the net at the 14:01 mark. Buerherer made it 3-1 Rams when he scored his second of the day 4:26 into the third period and Dave Macalino added an empty net shorthanded goal with 57 seconds left in regulation.

SUNY Canton had two five minute power plays in the game, one at the end of the first and another midway through the final period, and despite a barrage of shots and constant pressure could not find the back of the net. The Roos finished 1-for-8 on the power play as Rhode Island was whistled for nine penalties on Saturday.

Barr finished with 15 saves on 18 shots. Andrew Sherman had 43 saves for Rhode Island.
