Roos men’s basketball extends win streak to 6 with 77-73 victory at Houghton

Houghton, NY – Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) posted a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds and Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) netted a game-high 26 points as the SUNY Canton men's basketball team stayed perfect on the season with a 77-73 road victory over Houghton College on Saturday.

The Roos (6-0) jumped out to a quick 8-2 start but Houghton responded with a mini 6-0 run to tie the game up at eight. The teams exchanged the lead with the Highlanders taking their first lead of the contest at 15-12 after a Dylan Lambert three-pointer. The hosts extended their lead to as many as seven at 21-14, but the Roos closed the half on a 12-0 run to take a 33-29 lead at intermission.

Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) posted eight points in the spurt, while Kevin Baksh (Queens, NY) added four. Annorh paced the Roos with 12 points in the opening half, while Lambert finished with 10 for the Highlanders in the opening 20 minutes of play.

The Highlanders (4-2) got within two on multiple occasions early in the second half but SUNY Canton never relinquished its lead to as many as 15 (65-50) with 7:59 remaining. The Roos were in control throughout still leading by 13 with 50 seconds remaining before Houghton rattled off seven straight points to make the final score look closer than it appeared.

Annorh led the way with 26 points and four assists including an 8-for-10 performance at the free throw line, while Fletcher added 15 points and 16 rebounds, 14 of which came on the defensive glass. Vonallen Pickett (Brooklyn, NY) also finished in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) posted nine points and eight boards, while Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) and Walt Jeter (Fort Drum, NY) added five points and seven rebounds apiece.

Johnathan Stowe paced the Highlanders with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Brandon Camacho (13), Lambert (11) and John Nelson (10) all finished in double figures.

SUNY Canton held a 62-53 edge on the glass, which led to a big 50-18 advantage in points in the paint. Houghton had the upper hand in points off turnovers (23-11) and bench points (28-20).

The men's basketball team has a quick turnaround as it will play its fifth game in eight days when it visits Albany College of Pharmacy on Sunday at 4 p.m.
