(Alfred, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men's basketball team couldn't bounce back from a slow start as they lost to Alfred University 73-49 Wednesday night in Alfred, N.Y.
The Roos saw their record drop to 1-4 overall and they'll finish their first semester on Dec. 5 against Albany College of Pharmacy at 2 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Hall.
Alfred scored the first eight points of the game on Wednesday as the Roos struggled in the early going to get in an offensive flow. The lead eventually swelled to double digits and the Saxons took a 38-21 lead into intermission.
SUNY Canton did make an impressive push midway through the second half to pull within nine points of the lead After falling behind 45-22 with 16:14 left the Roos reeled off a 15-1 run converting 7 of 9 shots from the field to trim the lead to single digits. Tony Valentin (Perth Amboy, N.J.) scored seven of his team-high 15 points during that stretch.
But Alfred worked the ball inside and converted several layups over the next three minutes to boost the lead back to a comfortable margin.
Silvon John (Bronx, N.Y.) notched his second double-double of the year with 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Roos. Jeff Grenier (Whitehall, N.Y.) added seven points and Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed six points and eight boards.
Mike Stopera led three Saxons in double digits with 17 points and six rebounds. Josh Parker had 14 points and six rebounds.
