Lajas, Puerto Rico – The SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a pair of contests to Arcadia University and New Jersey City University on Friday in their second to last day at the Clemente Cup.
Game 1 – Box Score
Wilson Matos (Brooklyn, NY) hit a pair of triples but Arcadia used four home runs to earn a 10-6 victory on Friday in the Clemente Cup. Matos and Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) finished with three hits each and combined for 10 total bases, two runs and 3 RBI.
Arcadia scored at least one run each in the first through fourth innings. SUNY Canton got on the board in the third inning when Douglas singled up the middle to score Travis Schindler (West Islip, NY), who opened the inning with a walk.
Schindler doubled to right center in the fourth to score Kirkland Festa (Wellington, FL) after he reached base on a one out single. Trailing 6-2 heading to the fifth inning the Roos were able to bring across a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to knot the game at six.
Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) tripled to left center scoring Matos and Brett Hoberman (Wellington, FL) reached on an error to plate Baez. Matos tripled to center with one down in the fifth scoring Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY) and Douglas followed with an RBI base hit to right field.
The Knights added one run in the sixth and three each in the seventh and eighth innings to open up a 13-6 cushion. Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) drove a two run bomb to left in the ninth for the 13-8 final.
Luis Caballero (Jacksonville, FL) got the start throwing six innings, while striking out four batters and walking one. Mark DiBattiste earned his first win of the season for the Knights.
Game 2 – Box Score
NJCU got off to a quick start plating seven runs in the first and second innings. After an RBI single from Joe Coutinho plated Dmitri Rueger, Dan Berardi hit a three run homer to left to give the Gothic Knights a 4-0 lead after one. NJCU used a pair of RBI singles and an RBI triple to bring three runs across in the second.
SUNY Canton got two runs back in the third inning when Greg Dobies (Schenectady, NY) hit a two run shot to left scoring Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY), who led off the inning with a walk. The Roos added three runs in the fifth when Matos stroked a bases clearing 3 RBI triple to center field but was gunned down at the plate trying to score an inside-the-park home run.
The Knights added three runs in the sixth to regain a five run advantage headed to the seventh. The Roos added a sixth run in the seventh when Matos doubled down the right field line to score Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico).
NJCU opened up an 11-7 advantage in the eighth and Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) drove home the Roos final run with an RBI up the middle in the ninth.
Derrek DuPont (Catskill, NY) tossed seven innings striking out three batters and walking one.
The baseball team will close out play in the inaugural Clemente Cup on Saturday with a doubleheader against Misericordia University and Susquehanna University at 11 a.m./10 a.m. EST and 3 p.m./2 p.m. EST, respectively.
