Red Dragons women's basketball hold off Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.- A strong second quarter from SUNY Cortland (11-8, 8-4 SUNYAC) helped to lift the Red Dragons to a 63-49 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-18, 0-13 SUNYAC) Friday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Jefferson C.C.) finished with a game-high 16 points to lead the Bears, while freshman forward Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) had a team-high eight rebounds. For the Red Dragons, junior forward Justine Crespo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) fell short of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds and senior guard Kerry McHugh (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) tallied 15 points.

Luckie started off the scoring from behind the arc to put Potsdam on the board, which Cortland followed with six straight points. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the first quarter to finish with a Red Dragon three point lead. Justine Crespo led Cortland with six of their 12 points, while Walters put up four points for the Bears.

The Red Dragons held a 21-13 scoring advantage during the second quarter, which was ignited with a 12-0 run to start. Sophomore guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) hit a 3-pointer at the 6:52 minute mark to start a Bear 13-5 run that was capped with a layup by Smith. Cortland closed out the 10-span with four points to extend their lead to 33-22 to take into locker room. Junior guard Tanna Mohammed (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John H. Glenn) finished with six points, while junior captain Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) tallied seven to lead the Red Dragons. Smith tacked on five points, while junior guard Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond), Luckie and sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) each had a basket for the Bears.

The third quarter was the most evenly played 10 minutes between the teams with Cortland still holding a 10 point lead heading into the fourth. Potsdam had the slight 16-15 advantage during the quarter including nine of those points from Luckie and six different Red Dragons contributing to their 15 points.

The teams went basket-for-basket during the final quarter with Potsdam unable to make up the ground to catch Cortland's lead. Dufrane racked up six of the Bears' 11 points with Luckie, Smith and Walters each adding to the total. McHugh led the Red Dragons with nine points toward their 15 points.

Dufrane recorded 11 points, while Horton had seven points and four boards. Smith finished with seven points and six assists.

Vitucci matched Crespo with 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Junior forward Shana Crespo (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) closed out the leaders with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Bears are back tomorrow against Oswego State at 1 p.m.
