ONEONTA, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (8-16, 5-13 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Oneonta (20-5, 14-4 SUNYAC) 66-57 on Saturday afternoon. After a first half that was controlled by the Bears, Oneonta's 12-2 run to start the second half was what propelled them to victory as they never relinquished their lead. Freshman forward Devyn Elliot (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led Potsdam with 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) added 13 points and sophomore center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) had another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Elliot opened the scoring for the Bears on a fast break layup. Potsdam built an early 12-5 lead after Elliot made back-to-back layups, followed by Hunter's finishing through contact and Walters' transition bucket. The run forced an Oneonta timeout at the 2:55 mark. Coming out of the timeout, the Bears continued their run. Walters finished inside after a pass from senior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge Guilford) at the top of the key. On the next play, Smith also found Hunter for a 3-pointer from the left wing. To close the quarter, Teresa Anken hit a jumper from the right block for the Red Dragons to keep them in the ball game. The Bears led 17-9 after the first.

After trailing by double-digits for much of the first five minutes of the second, Oneonta got a catch-and-shoot three from Olivia Allrich off the pass from Madeline Frank. The 3-pointer cut the lead to seven, forcing a Potsdam timeout with 5:19 left. After Oneonta briefly cut the lead to four out of the timeout, Elliot pushed it back to eight with her two layups. Both teams went cold as Frank's finish inside at the 1:35 mark was the last field goal. The Bears led 31-26 at halftime.

Elliot continued her aggressiveness in the second half, opening up the scoring with an offensive rebound and put back. Casey Hayes opened up the scoring for Oneonta by finishing inside through contact and completing the three-point play with a free throw. On the Red Dragon's next offensive possession, Alexa Amalbert scored in transition and Hayes followed by finishing inside to tie the game at 33. At the 6:54 mark, Frank drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Red Dragons their first lead since the first quarter. The Bears called timeout midway through the quarter after the 12-2 run by Oneonta. The Red Dragons took their largest lead (11) at the 2:27 mark after a post up by Shelby Benjamin. Walters' two layups, followed by Elliot's scoop layup buzzer beater brought Potsdam back within just four at 46-42 going into the fourth.

The two teams traded three-point baskets early in the fourth. First with junior guard Leah Giavatto's (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) three from the left wing, followed by Amalbert's three on the next play. Midway through the quarter, the teams continued to trade baskets with Oneonta in front. After a Potsdam three, Frank went back on the other end and finished inside to push the lead back to 11. On the next play, the Bears got a 3-pointer from Hunter with 1:29 left. Within the last minute, the Red Dragons offensive rebounding prevented the Bears from making a run and they took the 66-57 win.

Hayes and Frank led Oneonta with 15 points each. Anken and Amalbert finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Potsdam shot 42 percent, while Oneonta shot 36 percent.

The contest concluded the careers of senior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg), Smith, senior forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina), senior forward Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) and Giavatto who is graduating early.
