POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team fell in their final SUNYAC home contest, 1-0. The Bears honored eight seniors before the game but couldn’t come out with a victory.

Geneseo (12-4-1, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) wasted little time in taking the early lead. Anne Beinetti took a crossing pass from Bella Masotti and found the back of the net 3:40 into the half. The goal was her conference-leading 16th of the season. Potsdam (3-11-2, 0-9) would get a scoring opportunity off the right leg of senior Maribeth Simmons. The chance would be stopped by Blue Knights goal keeper Julie Sanger who earned her fifth shutout of the season. The half would finish with Geneseo posting a 6-1 advantage in shots but the Bears defense was up to the challenge after the early score.

The second half was scoreless but each team had opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Dedra Palmer made a great save nine minutes into the half to keep the Bears within striking distance. Masotti beat her defender and was one on one with the keeper but Palmer deflected the shot for one of her six saves on the day. Less than a minute later, Potsdam’s best scoring attempt of the day came off the foot of Stephanie Cox whose shot sailed over the outstretched hand of Sanger but just high of the crossbar. Five minutes later, Masotti’s shot beat Palmer, but hit the post and the defense cleared it.

While the conference season ended in defeat, Potsdam Head Coach Mark Misiak saw good things.

“Aside from the early goal, we held our own,” said Misiak. “It’s a sign of how far we have come that we took a team that won the conference a couple years ago to the wire. Now, our freshmen have a year of conference play under their belt and I look forward to seeing them raise their level of play next season.”

The Bears will return to action on Tuesday for their final road match of the season. They will travel to Canton, N.Y. to take on St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
