The SUNY Potsdam women’s lacrosse team fell to Utica, 12-6, in a non-conference game with the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. Juniors Carly Richards (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Sierra Langkammerer (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each scored twice for the Bears, while senior Kathleen Frear (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and junior Whitney Boshart (Calcium, N.Y./Indian River) each recorded a single tally.

Utica struck first just 57 seconds into the contest, but Potsdam answered with two straight goals. Boshart scored at 25:50 and Richards gave the Bears their only lead of the contest at the 21:40 mark. The Pioneers went on a 5-0 run over the next 30 minutes before Richards cut the lead to 5-3 with 8:30 left in the half. Utica tacked on one more and led 7-3 at halftime.

Frear started the second half by converting on a free position at 27:28 to trim the deficit to three, but Potsdam wouldn’t get any closer. Again the Pioneers scored five straight to run the lead to 12-4 with 11:23 to play. Langkammerer went on her own two-goal run to close the game. The junior scored at with 5:04 left on an assist from junior Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) and wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted marker at 1:44.

In goal for Potsdam junior Kaci Milligan (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) started and made two saves, while allowing seven goals in one half. Freshman Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge)made her Bears debut playing the entire second half, allowing five goals and making two saves.

For the Pioneers, Shelby Barbay made nine saves in goal to earn the win, while Tammy Kohanski scored four goals and Katlyn Banker added three.

Head Coach Lauren Bruce was pleased with her team’s effort, but admitted the Bears need to continue to execute.

“It came down to who put the ball in the net,” said Bruce. “It was a very even game, but we ran into a very good goalie and a lot of our shots hit the post. We did play very well defensively, causing 18 turnovers.”

Bruce saw strong performances from several of her offensive players.

“Kathleen Frear played very well at midfield and scored her first goal of the season. Maribeth Simmons and Carly Richards had a lot of quality shots, but again were facing a very tough goalkeeper.”

The Bears return to Potsdam for their home opener on Wednesday, March 16, when they host the Cazenovia Wildcats at 4 p.m.
