The St. Lawrence women's hockey team did all they could to contain the explosive offense of No. 3 Boston College, but a late second-period power-play goal gave the Eagles momentum and an early third period score sealed the 2-1 victory for the visitors in Canton on Friday evening.

"What a great effort tonight by both teams," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "We had plenty of things go our way to be one shot out at the end of the game. Everyone gave it what they had."

Senior goaltender Carmen MacDonald made a season-high 41 saves for the Saints, including 18 in the first period to keep her team in the game and limit a Boston College offense that put up 10 goals in its season opener against Syracuse last week. Jenna Marks tallied the lone Saints goal.

"I love playing these games at this time of year," Wells added. "Boston College is as good a hockey team as we've seen in a long time; strong, fast, poised and they compete for every puck."

The Saints had already successfully killed four penalties against one of the top power-play units in the country, when senior assistant captain Kayla Raniwsky was assessed a checking penalty after a battle along the boards in the defensive zone with 1:59 remaining in the second period.

A little over a minute into ensuing power play opportunity, MacDonald made a save on Haley Skarupa's shot from the bottom of the right circle, but couldn't control the rebound. As MacDonald lunged forwarded to cover the puck, U.S. Olympian Alex Carpenter lifted it over the Pictou, Nova Scotia native and into the net to put the Eagles on the board 1-0.

Six minutes into the third period Carpenter again factored into the Eagles scoring play, moving in an odd-man rush with Kristyn Capizzano. Carpenter drew the St. Lawrence defender to the left side, before passing the puck off to Capizzano who was cutting hard through the middle for the finish and a 2-0 Boston College lead.

Less than four minutes later, junior forward Kailee Heidersbach forced a turnover in the neutral zone and carried the puck across the blue line before dishing it off to linemate Jenna Marks in the left circle. Marks let go of a quick wrist shot that beat the Eagles' Katie Burt short side to pull the Saints within one with her first goal of the year.

The Saints recorded more shots on goal in the final frame than they did in each of the first two combined, but two late third-period penalties kept the Saints from really being able to put pressure on the Eagles and make a final push for the game-tying goal.

Burt finished with 18 saves for Boston College to earn her second in of the season. MacDonald is now 1-2-0 on the season for the Saints.

The teams will return to Appleton Arena for game two of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. puck drop.
