A goal in each half helped No. 2 William Smith hand the St. Lawrence women's soccer team its first loss of the year, 2-0, in Geneva, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon. The Saints are now 5-1-2 on the year and 0-1-0 in the Liberty League, while the Herons improve to 8-0-0 and 1-0-0.
"This was a very aggressive, fast-paced game," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "While William Smith came at us with a very dynamic attack, I was incredibly impressed with our group defending."
William Smith finished with a 20-5 shot advantage, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. St. Lawrence goalkeeper Jackie Sovie made a career high eight saves to limit the Herons offense to just the two goals.
Lauren Randaccio put William Smith in front 1-0 in the 34th minute when she finished a cross from Kara Shue along the goal line, while Evie Manning made it 2-0 in the 85th minute on a blast from 20 yards out.
The Saints' best scoring chance came early in the second half when first-year Emily Wade carried the ball into the box and best William Smith goalkeeper Veronica Romines who came out to challenge, but put a shot over the crossbar.
"We did generate quite a few chances with Wade's shot just over the bar and Merriam's attempt just wide of the target, but they just didn't fall today," Bari added.
Merriam led St. Lawrence with two shots, while Wade, Amy Reunert and Lindsay Geier recorded the others. Romines finished with two saves for the Herons.
"Overall it was a very strong and impressive effort today and now we focus on our back-to-back weekend," Bari said. The Saints will continue their Liberty League schedule with a pair of road games at Bard and Vassar next weekend. They will face the Raptors at 4 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for a 2 p.m. match against the Brewers.
