MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—Morrisville State (5-10-3, 2-7 SUNYAC) came out on top in a 6-4 seesaw battle with the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-7-3, 3-5 SUNYAC) on Friday evening. The Bears got all of their goals in the second period from freshman defenseman Joseph Richardson (Palm Beach, Fla./PAL Islanders), freshman forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humbolt Broncos), junior forward Ben Mariano (Harrisburg, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) and sophomore forward Anthony Merante (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Thorold Blackhawks).
The Mustangs took advantage of two power plays in the first period. John Lauer scored at 4:36 and Ian Wood struck at 10:33. Potsdam was able to generate pressure on four man advantages, but couldn't crack Morrisville goalie Jared Young and the score was 2-0 after 20 minutes.
The teams combined for six goals in the second period. Richardson scored just 1:31 into the stanza with helpers from Merante and senior assistant captain Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack). Horn tied the game with another Vander Esch assist at 6:29. Just 1:19 later, Mariano put the Bears up 3-2 with assists from Merante and Vander Esch. At 13:09, Nick DeVito slowed Potsdam's momentum with an even-strength tally to even the score. Merante put the Bears up a final time with an unassisted tally at 16:30, but teams went into the second break even at 4-4 thanks to a Mustang goal from Ryan Bochert at 17:58.
Potsdam outshot Morrisville 13-6 in the final period, but it was the Mustangs adding the two last goals for the 6-4 win. Ryan Eberhart scored at 2:03 and again at 17:23 to close out the contest.
Bears junior goalie Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made 20 saves on the night and Young finished with 38.
Potsdam outshot Morrisville 42-26 and was 0-for-7 on the power play. The Mustangs were 2-for-3.
The teams complete the series in Morrisville at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
