McCann nets career-high, Saints women top SUNY Canton 86-56

First-year Ava McCann, shot an outstanding 8-for-10 from the arc and posted a career-high 27 points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to an 86-56 win over SUNY Canton in non-conference action on Friday evening in Canton, New York.

McCann also shot 9-for-14 from the floor, helping lead the Saints to 54 percent shooting from the floor against the Roos. Katie Frederick posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Marlee Gunn added 11 points for the Saints. Frederick also led the team with three steals and one block. Annabella Pugliese recorded six points and 11 rebounds for the Scarlet and Brown.

After a back-and-forth battle throughout the first quarter, the Saints held a 20-16 lead after ten minutes of play.

A layup from Billie Rivenbaugh gave the Roos the lead to start the second, but the Saints regained control with a 15-1 run and outshot the Roos 25-12 in the second quarter to take a 45-28 lead at the half.

It was all Saints from the third quarter on. St. Lawrence outscored SUNY Canton 21-14 in the third, posting a 66-42 advantage. St. Lawrence nearly matched the third quarter score in the final ten minutes, outscoring the Roos again 20-14, and maintaining a 20-plus lead throughout the final frame.

Autumn Watkins led SUNY Canton with 16 points, while Antanasia Chambers recorded 10 points and four rebounds. Both Watkins and Chambers grabbed three steals for the Roos.

St. Lawrence finished with 40 points off the bench, 19 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points, while SUNY Canton finished with 30 points off the bench and 16 points off turnovers.

With tonight's win, the Saints improved to 5-3 on the season, while SUNY Canton fell to 1-7 overall.

The Saints will travel to Boston, Massachusetts for the Judy Pearson Memorial Tournament on December 30-31, before resuming league play at home against Bard and Vassar on January 4-5.
