Lowville, NY – Wilson Matos hit a two-run home run and Jake Vierno held the Ithaca College bats to one run as the SUNY Canton baseball team split a pair of Empire 8 contests v. the Bombers on Saturday.

The Roos (6-20, 3-5 Empire 8) earned a 2-1 win in the opener, their first-ever win v. Ithaca, before the Bombers (15-12, 8-6 E8) bounced back with an 18-0 win in the nightcap.

Game 1

Matos hit a two-run homer in the first inning scoring Travis Schindler who opened the inning with a double in the gap to left center and that proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win in the opener.

Jake Vierno pitched a gem tossing six and one-third innings striking out eight batters, while allowing just three hits and one earned run as he earned his second win of the season. Zack Newman closed the final two-thirds of the seven-inning contest giving up just one hit to secure the save.

Game 2

The Ithaca bats erupted for 15 hits as they scored eight runs in the fifth and three runs in the ninth inning to salvage a split with a win in the nightcap. Jackson Smith led the Bombers with three hits, while Schindler, Joseph Dwy and Fernando Santana posted one hit each for the Roos and Santana reached base three times.

Luis Torres-Rivera took the loss for Canton giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. Jake Binder earned the win for Ithaca with seven strike outs in seven innings giving up just three hits.

These two teams will close out their weekend series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday at Ithaca College at 3 p.m.
