HENNIKER, N.H.—The Wentworth Institute of Technology scored in the 54th minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team on the final day of the New England College Tournament. Bears sophomore goalie Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) finished the day with eight saves.
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half. In the 15th minute, sophomore forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) nearly broke the scoreless tie but the shot rang the crossbar. While being outshot, Wentworth continued to battle and was earning opportunities as the first half ended with the Bears outshooting the Leopards by a 12-8 margin.
Bears senior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) hit a second crossbar in the 51st minute, but it was Wentworth's Emma daSilva who finally ended the stalemate as she found herself with the ball on a Potsdam turnover. She turned and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. The shot just got over Léonard and found the twine. The Bears continued to create opportunities in the closing minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.
Christie Fleming stopped six shots for the shutout. Potsdam outshot the Leopards 24-14 and generated five corner kicks, while not allowing a single one.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, when they host SUNY Canton at 7 p.m. in the annual Boyd Jones Cup.
