Poughkeepsie, NY – For the second straight league game, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team put up an impressive defensive effort, but the Golden Knights came up short in a 1-0 defeat against Vassar College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-8-1 overall and 0-5-0 in conference games, while Vassar edged back above .500 in league play at 3-2-0 and moved to 7-4-1 overall. Clarkson will take on Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half, Vassar steadily put pressure on the Clarkson defense, but Elyse Green made several key saves early on, recording four stops in the first 19 minutes. The two teams then played more evenly near the midway point, but Vassar again gained control to take five shots in a five-minute span late in the half. However, none of those attempts could get past Green and the two teams were tied at the break.

The second half was more of the same, with Green making stops and the rest of the defense blocking shots before the attempts could threaten the Clarkson frame. However, the Brewers finally broke through on their 20th shot when Rebecca Andrews went as far away from Green as she could with her shot, and the attempt bounced in off the left post at 72:35 to give Vassar a 1-0 lead.

Looking to tie the game up, Clarkson pushed its offense forward, getting a shot on goal from Ashley Abel's header at 82:17. The Knights picked up a corner kick chance at 87:30, but no shot was achieved and the clock rolled down with another close loss for the Green and Gold.

Vassar outshot Clarkson 23-2 in the game, with a 10-1 edge in shots on goal and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Green made nine saves for the Golden Knights while Fiona Walsh was called upon for one stop for the Brewers.
