Knights women's lacrosse team come up short at Potsdam State

Potsdam, NY - With 40.4 seconds left, junior midfielder Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) had a chance at the opponents' net, but Potsdam goaltender Kaci Milligan denied what would have been the game-tying goal as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team came up a goal short in a 13-12 loss to the Bears at the Potsdam Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1 with the loss, and will face Utica College at 4:00 pm on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field. Potsdam moved to 3-3 on the season.

Clarkson came out slow, possessing the ball for just a few seconds over the course of the opening two minutes, and quickly found itself trailing 2-0. Though it was a modest deficit, it was one that the Knights would never completely overcome as they were tied or trailed throughout. Freshman Marissa Mastronardi (Cortland, NY) got the Knights offense started as Clarkson quickly rallied back to tie the game 3-3 and then again at 5-5 following a score from Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY).

Trailing by a goal at halftime, Clarkson fell behind by three, the largest deficit of the ballgame, seven minutes into the second half. The Knights raced back to tie the game at 9-9, then again at 10-10, but the Bears provided themselves a two-goal cushion with under 10 minutes to go and Clarkson was unable to knot the game up again.

Sophomore Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) scored a team-best five points with three goals and a pair of assist, and VanDeValk added two goals and an assist, as well as controlling five draws. Mastronardi, Campbell, and sophomore Kerrie Cline (Tuxedo, NY) each scored twice for the Knights, while Catherine Burgess (Watertown, NY) also added a goal.

Clarkson goalkeeper Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made 14 saves and picked up a groundball for the Knights. Milligan made 12 saves for Potsdam.

Potsdam and Clarkson finished tied with 33 shots each, while the Bears were more aggressive on looseballs with a 22-11 edge in groundballs.
