In a battle between two of the top programs in Women's Hockey, sixth-ranked Boston University earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over seventh-ranked Clarkson University at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, NY on Friday afternoon.

Clarkson, which saw a three-game winning streak come to an end, and Boston University will close out their weekend series with a 3:00 p.m. game at Cheel on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights stand at 3-2 while the Terriers improved to 2-1.

"I thought we started the game off well putting some pressure on them in the opening ten minutes of the game but then got away from playing our game the rest of the way," stated Clarkson head coach Matt Desrosiers. "BU is a team that can make you pay for your mistakes and they were able to take advantage of a few today. We need to do a much better job tomorrow keeping things smart and simple and avoiding turnovers. BU has a lot of speed and talent so we will need to make better decisions tomorrow with the puck if we want to be successful. We need to put today behind us and bring a much better effort and mentality to the rink tomorrow."

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for three goals in less than two minutes midway through the second frame.

The Terriers opened the scoring at 8:48 when Dakota Woodworth took a cross-crease pass from Victoria Bach and slipped a shot through the five-hole of Clarkson's freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT), ending her shutout streak at 170 minutes. Boston University made it 2-0 with Marie-Philip Poulin's goal on a shot in close at 10:15.

The Knights came right back 19 seconds later when junior Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT) fed a pass back to the point to classmate Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT). The defenseman skated to right circle and fired in a shot for her second goal of the season and 90th career point at 10:34. Sophomore Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) also assisted

The Terriers regained the two-goal lead early in the final stanza when Sarah Lefort picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated over the blueline and fired in a high shot from the slot at 2:49.

Boston University outshot Clarkson 24-20. Tiley was strong in goal for the Knights with a 21-save effort including 11 in the scoreless first period. Victoria Hanson picked up the win in the BU net with 19 stops.

The Knights were 0-of-3 on the power play, including a pair of man-advantage chances over the final five minutes. The Terriers were 0-of-2 on the power play.
