Knights swept in first-ever softball doubleheader

Fort Myers, FL - Freshman Jamie Bridge (Plymouth, CT) struck out 10 in seven innings and allowed just three hits to highlight the first-ever Clarkson University Softball doubleheader, but the Golden Knights fell 4-0 to North Park and 12-0 to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the Lee County Sports Complex.

Things started off well for the Golden Knights in the opener as Bridge struck out the first two batters she faced. However, the Vikings followed with a double and two walks to load the bases. Meagan Bura then blooped a single over the infield to plate a pair and another came home on a wild pitch, putting Clarkson down 3-0 after the top of the first.

Freshman Ali Schwenzfeier (East Haddam, CT) delivered a single to left in the bottom of the first inning, becoming the first Clarkson player to record a hit. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Kat Tamburro (Frankfort, NY) recorded the first extra-base hit for the Knights when she laced a 1-1 pitch to left field for a double. Clarkson outhit North Park, 5-3, but the Vikings picked up another run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice bunt to round out the scoring.

Bridge kept the Knights in the game throughout, finishing with 10 strikeouts and allowing just three hits, with only one coming in the final six innings. Clarkson enjoyed a small two-out rally in the seventh with runners on first and third, but the Knights were unable to push across their first run in program history.

Clarkson's game-two challenge was Ohio Wesleyan, and the Battling Bishops used a smallball approach against the neophyte Knights. Ohio Wesleyan utilzied 10 bunts in the game with moderate success to put pressure on the Clarkson defense, and the tactic worked in the first when the Bishops scored twice thanks to a sacrifice fly and an error, but those baserunners got on board and were pushed around the bases via three consecutive bunts. The third was the same as nine runs came around with bunts, walks, and a few well-timed hits to the gaps. At that point, Ohio Wesleyan's Dani Haley was able to pitch with a lead and ended the game after five shutout innings.

Schwenzfeier doubled to left-center in the third and Lindsey Walsh (Lynn, MA) singled to left to account for two of Clarkson's three baserunners in the game.
