Knights stay alive in NCAA NY regional with 5-2 victory over Ramapo

Auburn, NY - After a late night, the Clarkson University Baseball team could have used more than a modest 12-hour turnaround before playing an elimination game in the NCAA New York Regionals. With a little help from Mother Nature, the Golden Knights picked up a couple extra hours of rest and it proved helpful as the Green and Gold held on for a 5-2 victory over Ramapo Thursday afternoon at Falcon Park.

Clarkson pushed its record to 20-18 on the season, marking the eighth time in 11 seasons with Jim Kane at the helm that the team has reached 20 victories. Ramapo ended its season with a 30-14 record.

With lightning in the area and some steady rain, the first game of the day was pushed back with a brief delay midway through the contest, allowing the Knights an extra 90 minutes of preparation. Sophomore Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) was immediately up to task for the Golden Knights as the team's starting pitcher. Chudy allowed a soft single to start the game, but didn't allow another hit until the fifth inning as he cruised through the first six frames on only 68 pitches. In contrast, Clarkson chased Ramapo starter Frank Baldini in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Junior David Kinney (Mexico, NY) ripped a single to center to start the frame and was moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY). Senior Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) doubled home Kinney with a shot to the left-center gap, and then came around on a single from Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY).

The Knights tacked on three more in the seventh inning as Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) and Justin McInerney (Grand Island, NY) started the rally by reaching base with one out in the frame. Kinney drove in a run with a double to left and, following an intentional walk to Lenney to laod the bases, Russell walked to force home another run. David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) then bounced into a fielder's choice, but was able to plate a run in the process, giving Clarkson a 5-0 lead.

Ramapo scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning as Clarkson committed a pair of errors that led to back-to-back run-scoring singles from Pat Driscoll and Nick DiGirolamo. However, Chudy worked out of the jam and retired seven of the next eight hitters to earn a complete-game victory.

Chudy struck out five and allowed only five hits in nine innings, picking up his eighth victory of the campaign, the third-most wins by a Clarkson pitcher in a single season. Kinney finished 2-for-5 to push his single-season hit total to 62, just five shy of the Clarkson mark set back in 2009 by Matt Curry. The remainder of Clarkson's five hits were scattered amongst five players.
