Knights split first meet of season versus SLU men's swim team

Potsdam, NY – Senior Al Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY) and junior Nick Short (Endwell, NY) each won a pair of individual events as the Clarkson University Swim team opened the 2014-15 season with a split against St. Lawrence University, winning the men's meet 129-100 and falling in the women's meet 128-89.

Catano claimed victories in the 200 freestyle (2:07.88) and 200 backstroke (2:20.30) and Short picked up a pair of victories in specialty events, earning wins in the 200 individual medley (2:23.06) and 200 butterfly (2:25.46). Short also earned a first-place spot in the 200 medley relay (1:55.03), joining Tyler Nichols (Spencerport, NY), Jon Ketcham (East Aurora, NY) and Chris Bay (Greene, NY). Bay also won the 50 freestyle (25.80 seconds) and Ketcham touched the pad first in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.30). Freshman Nikos Moisidis (Watervliet, NY) also finished first in the 100 freestyle in 57.29 seconds. Finally, the Knights swam the 200 freestyle relay as an exhibition, but had the top time (1:47.27) thanks to James Baldwin (Incline Village, NV), Moisidis, Chris Bankaitis (Horseheads, NY) and Alex Trass (Greene, NY).

For the first time in 17 years, the Golden Knights didn't entirely spot the opposition points in the diving events as freshman Joanne Bechaz (Clayton, NY) took second play in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The women opened the day with a win in the 200 medley relay (2:10.58) led by Tiffany Catano (Ronkonkoma, NY), Abigail Sullivan (Canandaigua, NY), Kayla Weckessar (Rhinebeck, NY) and Kelly Ludeke (Burnt Hills, NY) and closed the day with a first-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay thanks to Weckessar, Sarah Halstead (Milford, NH), Kelly Mulvehill (Penfield, NY) and Deonna Coleman (Derby, NY) in 2:07.28. Weckessar also won the 200 individual medley (2:40.82) and Sullivan finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:50.48).
