Knights split baseball doubleheader versus Union

After a late Union rally decided game number one, the Clarkson University Baseball team exploded for 17 runs in the second game to salvage a split against the Dutchmen.

Clarkson's record is now 17-14 overall and 12-6 in the Liberty League. Union is 17-12 overall and has a 11-7 conference mark.

In the first game of the day, two Union rallies doomed Clarkson as the Dutchmen took a 7-4 victory.

Clarkson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Anthony Padrazo started the game by reaching base on a Union error and then moved to second on a Will Coleman single. Greg Jasek hit a long fly ball that resulted in an out, but Padrazo advanced to third base. This paid dividends when Chris Miller stayed hot by singling through the right side to score Padrazo. Brad Pearson followed with a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Coleman.

Clarkson pitcher Eddie Miller cruised through the first two innings, not allowing a hit in those frames. However, in the third, Union put together two hits and three walks to score four runs in the frame. The big blow was a two run triple by Anthony Amoroso to break a 2-2 tie.

In Clarkson's half of the fifth, the Golden Knights plated two runs to tie the score. Padrazo ripped a one out single, and then Jasek hit a two out double to put runners on second and third. Miller worked to a full count and then turned a pitch around for a single up the middle to score both Padrazo and Jasek.

The tie was short lived though, as Union scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including Amoroso scoring the eventual game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Miller finished with a line of four innings pitched, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks. Ryan Riley pitched the last two innings and gave up three runs on three hits. It was the first loss of Riley's collegiate career and evened his record to 1-1.

In the second game, the Green and Gold jumped out to a 11-2 lead after three innings and never looked back, closing out a 17-5 win.

A Pearson single scored Coleman in the top of the first to start the game off right for Clarkson, but the big blows were reserved for the second and third. Connor Dietrich knocked in the second run on a sacrifice fly to score Connor Martin who had reached on a double to right center, Padrazo then singled to score Paddy Defino. After Coleman reached on an error, Jasek singled to score Padrazo and Coleman, although Jasek was thrown out trying to reach second.

Union got one run back in the bottom of the second, but Clarkson again strung together a big inning in its half of the third. A Padrazo double scored Defino and then Dietrich scored on a Jasek single. Jasek's single also loaded the bases full of Clarkson runners and they were immediately when Miller launched a grand slam to right field. It was the third weekend in a row that Miller has hit a home run and he now has four on the year.

Union added a run in the third inning, and both teams scored one run each in the fifth. Two more Clarkson runs in the sixth extended the lead once more. With the game well decided, Clarkson tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth, and Union grabbed two consolation runs in the final frame.

Ted Wilson came as close as possible to throwing a complete game, tossing eight and two thirds innings, allowing four runs on 14 hits and one walk. Wilson picks up his team high fifth win of the season. Wilson left the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but Andrew Smith came in and got the final out without any further damage.
