Winter Haven, FL - A six-run ninth put an exclamation point on the game for Keene State, as the Owls out mashed the Clarkson University Baseball team 18-10 at the Chain O' Lakes Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss, and have picked up a game against regional opponent Oneonta State at 9:30 am Sunday morning back in Winter Haven.
Keene State capitalized on several Clarkson miscues in the opening innings as Owls crossed the plate three times in the second and five more times in the third to gain an 8-0 lead. After going down in order in the first and second innings, the Knights responded with three runs in the bottom half of the third inning as Pete Clarke (Tully, NY), David Kinney (Mexico, NY) and Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) delivered consecutive run-scoring hits. Clarkson continued to make a comeback with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on an overthrow to second base on a steal and another RBI from Clarke. An RBI-single from Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) plated freshman Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) after he singled and stole second to lead off the fifth inning.
Keene State reclaimed a solid advantage with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the sixth, but once again Clarkson responded with two runs of its own when Jerry Coleman doubled home a run and Chris Falteisek (Baldwinsville, NY) plated another with a sacrifice fly. The Owls added single runs in both the seventh and eight innings, but blew the game open with sixth in the ninth inning as Keene State opened the final inning with five straight hits. In the bottom of the ninth, Clarkson scored its final two runs on a two-run double from Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA) before finally succombing.
Coleman finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Grainger went 2-for-5 with two runs driven in. David Kinney also had two hits, and Clarke drove in a pair as well.
