A late goal in overtime by the home-standing Yale University Bulldogs knocked the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team out of the unbeaten ranks in ECAC Hockey play as the Golden Knights suffered a 3-2 loss in New Haven, CT on Saturday afternoon.
The Green and Gold, who skated to a 1-1 tie at Brown on Friday night, fall to 5-8-2 overall and to 3-1-1 in conference play. Clarkson hosts Vermont in a non-league series at Cheel Arena next weekend.
The Knights held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Yale (2-6-2, 2-3-1) rallied back both times and then pulled out the victory with Aleca Hughes’ goal at 3:14 of the five-minute sudden-victory overtime session.
Freshman Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) gave Clarkson the opening lead with her first collegiate goal at 6:03 of the first period with senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) and freshman Shelby Nisbet (Wiseton, SASK) assisting. The Bulldogs made it 1-1 with a power-play marker from Alyssa Zupon at 14:42 of the first.
The Knights regained the lead late in the second stanza as sophomore defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) connected for her second goal of the season, a power-play tally at 17:50. Rattray and freshman Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) assisted.
Yale came back again to tie it midway through the third with Bray Ketchum’s goal at 9:40, setting the stage for overtime.
Clarkson outshot the Bulldogs 38-30. Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 27 stops
The Knights went 1-of-2 on the power play and killed off four of five of Yale’s man-advantage chances.
