One week after skating in a disappointing loss and an uplifting victory on the road, the Clarkson University Hockey team experienced similar results, except in a reverse order, in its opening weekend at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights were shut out by Bowling Green, 3-0 on Saturday, after blanking the Falcons 4-0 on Friday.

Clarkson, which saw its modest win streak stopped at two, falls to 2-2 overall, while Bowling Green picks up its first win of the year to stand at 1-3. The Knights close out a four-game home stand next weekend, hosting Bentley University in a two-game series.

The Falcons’ sophomore goaltender Andrew Hammond made 31 saves, including 14 in the opening period, to post the whitewash in his first career victory in 21 games.

Clarkson had the better of the play in the first period, out shooting the Falcons 14-9, but it was Bowling Green that took the early lead. Late in the stanza, the Falcons’ Marc Rodriguez took a long pass at the Knights’ blueline, split the Clarkson defense, broke in alone and lifted in his first goal of the season at 15:46 to give the visitors their first goal of the weekend. Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Jerry Freismuth recorded the assists.

The Knights had their opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the middle frame with three consecutive power plays, but could not covert to extend their drought with the man-advantage to 0-of-17 through the first six games.

Just 22 seconds into the third period, Bowling Green capitalized on a Clarkson turnover deep in the Knights’ zone and made it 2-0 on James McIntosh’s first goal of the year, an unassisted tally in front. The Falcons closed out their first win of the season with an empty-net goal by David Solway with 1:33 remaining.

Clarkson out shot Bowling Green 31-24. Junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) made 21 saves in defeat.
