Potsdam, NY - In the waning moments of the second half against Gordon College on Saturday afternoon, it appeared as if the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team would be headed to another overtime session. However, a late goal from sophomore Tyler Rodrigues (Flemington, NJ) lifted the Golden Knights to a 1-0 win over the Fighting Scots, ending a 500-minute scoreless drought for the Green and Gold at Hantz Turf Field.
The Golden Knights improved to 2-4-1 on the season with the victory, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 1-4-2. Clarkson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Plattsburgh State.
The Fighting Scots started the game with crisp passing to keep the Knights on their heels, but eventually Clarkson asserted itself offensively with several hard shots from outside the penalty area that either were tipped by Gordon goalkeeper Alex Sosler or whipped over the crossbar. Clarkson gained five corner kicks in rapid succession, but the team was unable to convert on any of its chances in the first half.
It was more of the same in the second half for the Knights, though their chances weren't quite as plentiful as in the first 45 minutes. But it was in the second stanza that Clarkson ended its long scoring drought. Tyler Rodrigues finished off a scrum in front by volleying a ball out of the air and into the back of the net from in close with just 5:10 remaining in the game to give Clarkson its first goal in 520:48. The only other Clarkson goal in the 2011 season came midway through their second game of the season against Oneonta State.
Clarkson finished the contest with a 12-6 edge in shots, though both teams each had seven corner kick chances. Junior Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) picked up his third shutout of the season, making two saves for the Knights, while Sosler made six saves in the first half for Gordon before being relieved by Ryan Coli, who stopped two shots in the second half.
