New London, NH - Down one with just over a minute remaining, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball offense stalled as Suffolk University pulled out a 68-63 victory in the consolation game of the Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 1-2 overall on the season after dropping a pair this weekend, but the team looks to get back on track on Tuesday when Clarkson hosts SUNY Canton at 6:00 pm.
Both offenses came out firing initially as Clarkson found itself down two, 13-11, with less than five minutes expired from the game clock. However, the Knights offense was shut down over the next five minutes as Suffolk went on a 13-0 run before a Morgan Carella (Roslyn Heights, NY) 3-pointer halted the drought. Clarkson would finish the half trailing by 12 points, 37-25.
In the second half, Suffolk advanced their lead to as many as 17 points (48-31), but Clarkson held firm and wouldn't let the game get out of hand. After a pair of free throws from Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY), the Knights crawled back to within single digits at 50-41. Down by 11 just a few moments later, Clarkson went on a 10-2 run, capped by a Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) 3-pointer, and cut the deficit to just three points. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the game, and Clarkson was within a point after a Carella lay up with 1:10 to go, making the score 64-63. Unfortunately, the Knights could not complete the comeback and fell by five.
Turner finished with a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and added in four assists before fouling out. Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) added 11 points, six rebounds, and four blocks, while Carella and Goldberg contributed 10 and 9 points, respectively. Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY), who had a monster game on the opening night of the tournament, was selected to the All-Tournament team.
For Suffolk, Jennifer Ruys led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Mary Garon contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Black tossed in 15 points.
