Knights bow out of NCAA NY Regional with 6-1 loss to EConn State

Auburn, NY - With 13 runners left on base through nine innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team certainly had its chances against Eastern Connecticut State, but the Golden Knights couldn't convert their opportunities and fell 6-1 in an elimination game at the NCAA New York Regional held at Falcon Stadium.

The Golden Knights ended their season with a record of 20-19 overall, while Eastern Connecticut State, ranked 17th in the country, improved to 34-12.

Clarkson put a pair of runners on base in the first, but couldn't cash in, a theme throughout Friday's game. Clarkson put at least one runner on base in eight of the nine innings, but only pushed one across in the eighth. Senior starting pitcher Kyle Moldoff (Nassau, NY) pitched four scoreless innings to match his counterpart, Chris Wojick, from the Warriors. Moldoff was touched for a run in the fifth and was removed for reliever Anthony Farrell (Topsham, ME), who nearly wiggled out of the jam. Farrell had a swing and a miss from Warriors hitter Rob Perry, but the foul-tipped, would-be third strike was dropped, allowing Perry another chance. He tripled to the gap to plate a pair and another run came around on a soft single from Jim Schult, giving Eastern Connecticut State a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Knights looked ready to respond as the team loaded the bases, but Wojick struck out Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) to end the threat. The next inning saw the same situation, but reliever Evan Chamberlain whiffed David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) to keep Clarkson scoreless.

Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning. Justin McInerney (Grand Island, NY) led off with a single and Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) singled three batters later to put men on first and second. A lazy flyball by Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) was dropped, allowing McInerney to score. The Warriors tallied two more in the top of the ninth to insure the victory.

Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) went 2-for-4 and McInerney was 2-for-5.
