Knights and Wildcat booters battle to scoreless tie

Potsdam, NY - With eight saves from Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT), the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team had a strong defensive effort, but the offense came up short as SUNYIT and the Golden Knights played to a scoreless tie, 0-0, Tuesday evening at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-1-1 overall on the season, while SUNYIT remained winless in two games at 0-1-1. Clarkson hosts Geneseo on Friday, starting at 4:00 pm.

SUNYIT had the advantage in shots in the first half, as well as a lead in corner kick chances, but neither team had more than a single chance on the goal that really proved to be a legitimate chance. The Wildcats had a hard shot from the center of the penalty area, but Clarkson goalkeeper Spagnolo dove to make the save and the ball stuck in his hands without allowing a rebound. Clarkson, too, had a good chance on a scrum in front, but Malick Faye gathered in the bounding ball to end the threat.

In the second half, the opportunities were even fewer, though it appeared as if the Wildcats would break the tie in the 63rd minute. Faye boomed a kick over midfield and the ball took an odd bounce, getting the Clarkson defense out of position. The misplay created a two-on-one for SUNYIT as Diego Montaleza made a strong run, but his kick from 20 yards out rolled wide.

Ten minutes later the Wildcats had another chance with Montaleza making another run and he had another good shot, but this time Spagnolo came out to cut down the angle and kicked the ball out of harm’s way.

In the first overtime period, each team had direct kick chances from just outside the penalty area, but each time the players misfired high, allowing no second opportunities.

Spagnolo finished with eight saves, while his counterpart Faye made seven stops. The Wildcats finished the game with a 20-11 edge in shots and a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
