A two run, pinch-hit home run by first-year student Caroline Kieltyka in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the St. Lawrence University softball team a 9-1 victory in Ft. Myers, FL on Wednesday.  In the second game of the day, the Saints held a one run lead against Fredonia until the Blue Devils strung together four hits in the seventh inning to claim the 2-1 win.  The Saints move to 5-3 on the season.

In the first game of the day, the Saints wasted no time offensively as the first four batters came across the plate on five consecutive hits.  A two-run home run by senior Melissa Rogers in the bottom of the second added a pair of runs to the St. Lawrence lead.  Washington College's lone run came in the top of the third on an RBI single by junior Leigh Carbutt.

In the fourth inning, an RBI single by sophomore Chelsea Cavellier extended the Saints' lead to six runs (7-1).  Kieltyka's two-run home run came in the bottom of the fifth inning and ended the game due to the eight-run rule.  It was her first collegiate career home run.

Sophomore Elizabeth McGinley earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits and no walks while striking out five batters in five innings.  Cavellier and Rogers each had two hits for the Saints.

In the second game of the day, the Saints struggled offensively but senior pitcher Rachel Duffany and the team's defense kept the Blue Devils at bay.  In the fifth inning, senior Megan Goodemote reached on a base hit to center field and was plated by McGinley to score the first run of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, four consecutive base hits by the Blue Devils gave Fredonia the 2-1 win to preserve its perfect 12-0 record at the start of the 2011 season.

The Scarlet and Brown will battle St. Mary's College and Richard Stockton tomorrow.  The games are scheduled to begin at 5:00pm and 7:00pm.
