UNION, N.J.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (3-2) repeatedly rallied against Kean University (7-1), but fell 11-10 in a thriller on Wednesday night. Sean Bobal scored a game-high five goals for the hosts, while senior midfielder Pat Morrill led the Bears with three goals.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead, by the 6:38 mark. Morrill got Potsdam on the board at 5:09 with an unassisted tally. Just over a minute later, junior captain Rob Kunz fed freshman attackman Ed Doherty to make it a 3-2 contest. Kean scored the next two and took a 5-2 advantage into the first break.

Bobal buried his third of the game four minutes into the second quarter, but freshman Pat Bonafede answered for the Bears at 8:45 to close the gap to 6-3. Potsdam held the edge in play for the rest of the period, but the score remained the same at the half.

Freshman midfielder Matt Kennedy scored his first career goal 1:56 into the third quarter and the Potsdam offense started to roll. After Kean's Richard Cheifitz third tally of the game put the Cougars back in front by three, Bears scored the next four to grab an 8-7 lead. Junior midfielder Jared Flath set up senior attackman Kyle Nicholas at 9:57. Morrill notched his second at 8:09 and Flath fed up Kunz to tie game 54 seconds later. At the 4:35 mark, Morrill completed his hat trick to give the Bears their only lead of the contest. The advantage lasted just over four minutes as Bobal buried his fourth with 30 seconds left in the quarter and the teams were tied at 8-8 after 45 minutes.

Good pressure from the Cougar offense resulted in Bobal's fifth score at the 10:02 mark of the final quarter. Brad Mills added a man-up goal at 8:26 to put Kean up 10-8. Junior attackman Kevin Logan got Potsdam back within one at 5:25 and senior captain Brady Fremont set up Doherty's second less than two minutes later to tie the game again. However, Mills scored again for the decisive marker with just 1:37 on the clock. The Bears had a final chance to tie the score with five ticks left, but the shot whistled wide and time ran out.

In goal, Potsdam senior captain Stefan Sloma stopped 13 shots in another strong showing. Cougar Dino Vitale made seven saves for the victory. Kean outshot the Bears 41-35 and won 18 faceoffs to Potsdam's six.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, March 30, when they travel to Castleton State to take on the Spartans at noon.
