Runs in the second and third innings helped the St. Lawrence baseball team build a 3-0 lead on Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida, but Johns Hopkins went on to score seven unanswered runs en route to a 7-3 win over the Saints.
Evan O'Keeffe and Tyler Guido both went 2-for-4 to lead the Saints at the plate, while Brendon Frank finished with two RBI and James Cronin drove in the other St. Lawrence run of the afternoon.
Cronin got the Saints on the board first in the top of the second inning with an RBI double to right center that brought O'Keeffe in to score for a 1-0 lead.
St. Lawrence extended the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to center by Frank that drove in Guido and Taylor Digilio to push the margin to 3-0.
Hopkins cut the deficit to one run with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning, before a two-run home run by Zach Jaffe in the bottom of the fifth gave the Jays the lead for good, 4-3. They added two more in the sixth and one in the eighth to push to the final 7-3 margin.
Starter Patrick Greenan was poised through five innings on the mound for the Saints, allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and three
strikeouts. Anthony Ferraro allowed two runs on one hit with three strikeouts of his own in a an inning of relief, while Will Fellows held Hopkins to a run on two hits in the final two innings with pair of strikeouts.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-5 on the year, while Johns Hopkins improves to 9-6.
St. Lawrence will resume play at the Gene Cusic Classic on Friday, March 23 at 9 a.m. against Denison.
