LIVERPOOL, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (17-14, 8-6 SUNYAC) hit four homers to sweep two extra-inning games from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (10-23, 3-13) on Wednesday afternoon in Liverpool. The Hawks took the opener 8-2 in eight innings and the finale 6-4 in 11 innings.

Game one was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings. Bears sophomore Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) and Hawks senior Katie Rutcofsky (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) traded zeros until the fifth. In the top of the inning, Rutkofsky hit a one out, two-run homer to put New Paltz up 2-0.

Hubinsky led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single. After senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) bunted her to second, sophomore catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) knocked her in with a single to center. Down to the final out in the bottom of the seventh, Marsman singled to drive in junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) to knot the score at 2-2. The Hawks broke the game open with six runs in the top of the eighth. Junior designated hitter Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) drove in three runs with a double and junior center fielder Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) closed the scoring with a two-run homer.

Rutcofsky (11-6) allowed two runs on nine hits and three walks in her eight innings to earn the win. She struck out five. Hubinsky allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in 4.1 innings pitched. Senior Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. Freshman Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) retired the one batter she faced in the top of the eighth.

Ott was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Hubinsky was 2-for-4 with a run. Marsman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Brace finished 1-for-3 with the other RBI.

New Paltz sophomore left fielder Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) led off the game two with a solo shot. Potsdam tied the game after Hubinsky drove in Ott with a sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the first. The Hawks regained the lead in the top of the second after Spriggs reached on an error and came around to score on ground out. Senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second and junior first baseman Erin Murphy (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) drove her in on a ground out. Freshman pinch hitter Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen) put New Paltz back in front with a RBI single in the top of the fifth, but Potsdam tied the game again in the bottom half when Ott stole home.

There was no further scoring until the top of the 11th. With two runners on and no outs, Spriggs hit a three-run shot to make it 6-3. Senior Lyndale Nephew (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Seton Catholic) was placed at second base to start the bottom of the inning for the tiebreaker rule. She moved to third on a ground out and came into score on a single to left from Lerman. Murphy walked with two outs to get the tying run aboard, but Potsdam couldn't get any closer.

Rutcofsky (12-6) picked up her second win of the day in relief after allowing one unearned run in the final five innings of play. She struck out seven more, while giving up just two hits and two walks. Junior Taylor Corwin (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) allowed two earned runs on four hits and four strikeouts in the first six innings for a no-decision. Bears sophomore Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks over the first 4.1 innings. McCauley (2-5) allowed two earned runs on four hits and four K's in the last 6.2 innings.

Ott was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Brace was 3-for-5 and Lerman went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Tomorrow Potsdam heads to Johnson State for a nonconference doubleheader with the Badgers beginning at 3 p.m.
