Gouverneur High School Trap Shooting Team takes 5th place at state meet

GOUVERNEUR – Gouverneur’s high school trap shooting team took fifth place at the New York State HS Trap Shooting Tournament June 9 at the Bridgeport Rod and Gun/NYS ATA trap course.

Several Gouverneur Wildcat team members placed well, with two in fourth place, one in fifth, two in ninth, and one in 13th place in their respective classes, securing the team’s fifth-place standing overall in the state

Forty-two teams with over 650 high school trap shooters converged on the small town just outside of Syracuse.

Over 64,000 shells were fired at the meet without a mishap. “The weather was perfect, not one participant sat on a bench, all partook in the sport, and with all the smiling faces, we think everyone had a great time,” wrote Paul Capellino.

High school team trap shooting started only a few years ago, and has grown to now include teams from 24 states. It is open to all high school students, boys and girls from grades 9-12 with acceptable grade averages,. The teams shoot in the spring at local shooting clubs and in competition with other schools.

All expenses for the GHS team is paid for by the parents or through private donations and fundraisers. their lives.

Some of the Wildcats trap shooters will be going to the first National High School Trap Competition in Michigan on July 12-15.

The team expressed thanks to the Gouverneur Rod and Gun Club, which handles all of the local shoots and which has just finished installing a new trap field for the team to use, and the board of education for allowing the GHS trap team to be a part of the competition.
