POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-4) fell to Clarkson University (1-3) 72-58 Tuesday evening at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. Senior guard Katy Briedis recorded game and career-highs with 28 points for Potsdam. Sophomore guard Leighann Tomita led the Golden Knights with 17 points.

The Bears jumped out quickly to an 11-4 lead in the early stages of the first half behind sophomore forward Bailey Weigel and Briedis. Clarkson slowed the Potsdam charge when freshman Ashley Loggins drilled a three-pointer to claim a 17-14 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Sophomore forward Carli Reynolds answered the Golden Knights offensive with a long three ball from the top of the arch to notch the score at 17 all. The Bears gained a 26-21 advantage when freshman forward Margaret Wall hit a free throw with 4:35 remaining in the first half. Once again, Clarkson generated another run to close out the half on top, 27-26.

Clarkson came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. The Golden Knights controlled the boards and rode the shooting of Tomita and sophomore guard Jovanna Snead. The duo propelled Clarkson to a 14-point lead with 8:34 remaining in the second half. A layup from Loggins gave the Golden Knights a 21-point advantage at 69-48 with 3:06 left. The Bears closed the contest with a 10-3 run before falling by the 72-58 count.

Clarkson's Snead finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Loggins chipped in 12 points and seven boards. Sophomore forward Brooke Butkovsky just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

In support of Briedis, junior forward Jessica Kouzan scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Clarkson shot 46 percent from the floor, including a torrid 5-9 in the second half from beyond the arc. The Bears hit 39 percent of their shots. Potsdam forced 17 Golden Knight turnovers, while turning the ball over 14 times themselves.

The Bears return to action this weekend as they open SUNYAC play at Cortland and Oswego. Potsdam faces the Red Dragons at 6 p.m. on Friday night and the Lakers at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
