Clarkson University's Women’s Hockey team opens the home portion of the schedule this weekend by hosting a pair of Hockey East rivals at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights, guided by fourth-year head coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers and assistant coach Matt Kelly, will face off against Providence College on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. followed by another 1:00 p.m. faceoff against the University of Connecticut on Sunday.

Clarkson, with a 0-1-1 overall record, will look to get out to a quicker start in this weekend’s games than it did last Friday and Saturday. The Knights were outscored 5-0 combined in the first periods of last weekend’s season-opening contests at Vermont and St. Lawrence.

Against the Catamounts last Friday in Burlington, Clarkson trailed 3-0 after the opening 20 minutes, but battled back to gain a 3-3 tie on the road. In Saturday’s game at St. Lawrence, the Green and Gold fell behind 2-0 in the first, but were able to even the game at 3-3 after 40 minutes. The Saints, however, scored three unanswered goals in the third frame to gain a 6-3 victory on their home ice in Canton.

Last year’s top scorer, sophomore Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) leads the Golden Knights through the first two games with one goal and three assists. Senior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) and sophomore standout Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) have one goal and two assists apiece. Baribeau is looking to become only the fifth Clarkson player alltime to reach the Century mark. Through 115 career games, Baribeau has tallied 94 points on 47 goals and 47 assists.

Sophomore defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) and freshmen Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) and Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) have also scored goals for the Knights.

Sophomore Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) has played both games in the Clarkson goal, and holds a .857 save percentage and a 4.32 goals against average.

Providence travels to the North Country also looking for its first win of the season after tying (0-0) and losing (3-1) to Bemidji State in Minnesota last weekend. The Friars posted a 22-12-1 overall record and finished in third place in Hockey East with a 12-8-1 league mark in 2010-11.

Connecticut also is 0-1-1 through the first two games of the season with a tie (3-3) and a loss (1-0) at home to Rensselaer last weekend. The Huskies were 13-19-3 overall and placed fourth in Hockey East last season with a 9-9-3 conference slate.

Clarkson is 2-1-1 alltime against Providence and 1-1 against Connecticut.
