GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (7-2-5, 5-1-2 SUNYAC) scored in the 25th minute to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (9-6-1, 2-5-1) 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the rain.
The Blue Knights held the edge in play in the first half and broke through at 24:02. Ashley Byrne sent a free kick into the box and Laurie Knapp one-timed it home for the contest's only goal. Bears senior goalie Bri Thibeau (Salem, N.Y./Salem) stopped five shots in the first 45 minutes.
Geneseo didn't relent in the second half, firing 15 more shots in Thibeau's direction. Potsdam's keeper continued to stand tall, turning aside all 11 that came to her. Despite the spirited play from Thibeau, the Bears offense was unable to generate enough pressure to knot the score.
Thibeau finished with a career-high 16 saves in the contest. Emily Janiszewski stopped two shots to earn the shutout for the Blue Knights. The loss ends Potsdam's playoff hopes for the season.
The Bears head to Brockport tomorrow afternoon to wrap up conference play with the Golden Eagles at 1 p.m.
