Potsdam, NY - After a solid start with a few chances on the opponent's goal, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team found itself defending more often than attacking, and dropped a 3-0 decision to Geneseo Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-2-1 on the season and will face the University of Rochester at 2:00 pm on Saturday, again at Hantz Turf Field. Geneseo remained unbeaten through three games at 2-0-1.

Clarkson had a small edge in shots, 4-1, in the early going as the Golden Knights sprayed a few attempts wide of the Geneseo goal, but the Blue Knights were first to get on the scoreboard. Ryan Yurchack settled a ball just inside of the penalty area and sent a soft groundball through the middle, catching the Golden Knights flat-footed as they were awaiting a potential offsides call, but Ian Mort stayed onside and was able to make a one-touch off the pass for the goal at 24:36, his first of the season.

Clarkson tried to hold off Geneseo’s charge for the remainder of the half, but wasn’t able to as the Blue Knights picked up another score in the waning moments. With just under two minutes to go, Ian Mort kept the ball away from two Clarkson defenders and was able to send a strong cross through the box. One of the Clarkson fullbacks attempted to head it out of the way, but the ball sailed over him and found the head of Ken DiDonna, who knocked the shot in with 1:50 to go in the half.

Geneseo continued to put pressure on in the second half with numerous corner kick chances leading to its third goal of the game. With the ball bouncing around inside the six-yard box, Rob Loccisano finally was able to get a decent shot off from in close, catching Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) leaning on direction and bouncing off his hands into the corner on the near post.

Geneseo finished with a 15-8 edge in shots and a 9-5 lead in corner kick chances. Spagnolo made five saves for the Golden Knights, while Sam Murphy stopped three shots in the win for the Blue Knights.
