Evans homers but Roos softball drop doubleheader on Day 2 of Gene Cusic Classic

Fort Myers, FL – Alicia Evans hit a three-run homer but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a pair of games to Nazareth College and Edgewood College on their second day of competition in the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida.

Game 1: Nazareth 12 Canton 3, 5 Innings – Box Score

Nazareth struck for eight runs in the third inning, the final three of which came of an unearned variety. The Roos got three back in the top-half of the fourth behind a three rung shot to left center field off the bat of Evans. She plated Courtney Hyland and Desiree Pryce who both singled earlier in the inning.

The Golden Flyers added four insurance runs in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory with a two-run home run and a 2 RBI double.

Nicole Woodward scattered 14 hits and seven earned runs over 4.1 innings with one strike out and one walk. Kylie Smith earned her first win of the season for Nazareth giving up three earned runs on six hits with four strike outs and a walk in five innings.

Game 2: Edgewood 5 Canton 0 – Box Score

Edgewood scored two each in the first and fifth innings, while adding one in the second frame to secure a 5-0 win in the nightcap.

A pair of RBI singles in the first started the scoring for the Eagles and a sacrifice fly in the second made it 3-0. Amanda Mesiter added two insurance runs in the fifth on a two-run homer to left center.

Courtney Hyland singled with two down in the first inning but was unable to score. Desiree Pryce led off the bottom of the second with a single to left field and reached third base with two outs but was unable get Canton on the board. Brittany Miner doubled with two outs in the fifth but was left in scoring position.

Woodward surrendered four earned runs with two strike outs and a walk on 11 hits over seven innings. Maddy Coppens earned the victory on a three-hitter with two strike outs.

The softball team is off on Tuesday before it returns to action in the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday when it squares off with Brockport and Crown College at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
