St. Lawrence University sophomore Ashley-Kate Durham earned All-America honors for the first time in her collegiate career on Saturday at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Stowe, VT. The Timmins, ON native battled brutal conditions and finished in third place overall in the women's slalom.
Durham, competing in the national championships for the second straight year, posted a time of 58.95 in her first slalom run. She then posted a fantastic time of 56.66 to propel herself into the top-3, finishing only .36 seconds out of second place.
"We're extremely proud of what Ashley did today," said St. Lawrence head alpine ski coach Willi Steinrotter. "She had a very good day in difficult racing conditions. She proved during the second run that she wasn't intimidated by the conditions and charged like she would at any other course."
Durham earned All-America honors and became only the second women's alpine skier in St. Lawrence history to land a podium spot with her time of 1:55.61. Denver's Sterling Grant won the national championship on Saturday with a time of 1:54.27, while teammate Lindsay Cone followed in second place. Their one-two finish allowed Denver to win the team national title as well.
The slalom events at the NCAA Championships, hosted by UVM, completed the 2011 ski season.
