CU softball earns second consecutive sweep

In two very different games, the Clarkson University Women's Softball team was able to come out on top both times to run its winning streak to four games. The Golden Knights are now 4-0 on the season.

In the first game, Clarkson used a big fifth inning rally to knock off Western New England 4-1. After Katie Pelton had thrown four scoreless innings to start the game, she also scored the first run of the game. Pelton reached first in the fifth on a fielder's choice followed by a Summer Lancette single and a Raenna Dunn walk to load the bases with one out. Sarah Armstrong then stepped up and shot a single to left field, scoring Pelton and Lancette. Jamie Bridge kept the rally going with a single to left field to score Dunn and put the Golden Knights up 3-0.

Western New England threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Pelton gave up three straight singles to score one run and leave runners on second and third. However, Bridge relieved Pelton and was able to sandwich a strikeout and a popup around a hit batter to end the threat without any further runs.

Clarkson added one more insurance run in their half of the seventh. Dunn singled to right field and then stole second base to move into scoring position with one out. After an Armstrong popup, Bridge helped herself by singling up the middle to score Dunn.

Pelton finished with the win and moves to 2-0 on the year while Bridge grabs her first save of the young season. Dunn, Armstrong, and Bridge were the top three hitters in the order and combined to reach base seven times.

The second game was not scoreless for long. MCLA jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning. Clarkson got one back when Armstrong drove in Lancette with a single in the top of the third, but MCLA answered in their half to make the score 4-1.

However, the fourth inning was where Clarkson finally broke through. Chelsea Elliott led off the inning with a laser that cleared the left field fence for the first Clarkson round tripper of the season. That was not all for the Green and Gold though. Two straight singles put runners on first and second and then two MCLA errors left Clarkson with another run on the scoreboard and runners on second and third, still with zero outs. Bridget Woolley then hit a single that scored Ali Schwenzfeier. After Lancette was hit by a pitch, Dunn worked a walk to score another run. An Armstrong groundout scored another run and then Bridge was able to drive in the sixth run of the inning on a fly ball.

MCLA scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to draw within one, but that was it. Bridge was once again called in to finish the game, throwing the final three innings for her second save of the day.

Clarkson will play its third doubleheader in as many days when it takes on Framingham State and North Park University.
