CU baseball moves into first with sweep of Skidmore

For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Baseball team did not trail after the first inning as the Golden Knights completed a sweep of Skidmore.

In the first game of the day, Clarkson used a great pitching performance from Will Coleman to beat Skidmore 5-2. The Green and Gold got on the board in the top of the second when Brad Pearson scored on a Skidmore error and then added another run in the top of the third when Mike Bonk scored on a passed ball.

Skidmore got a run of its own in the bottom of the third, but two Clarkson runs in the bottom of the fourth regained some breathing room. First Ben Knauf scored on a single by Anthony Padrazo and then Coleman helped himself by knocking in Bonk with a single to right field.

Clarkson added one more run in the top of the seventh when Connor Martin doubled down the right field line, scoring Pearson.

Skidmore threatened in the bottom of the seventh. After Coleman retired the lead-off batter, the next three batters reached base on a walk, an error, and a bunt single respectively to bring the tying run to the plate. A sacrifice fly brought home one run and then another Skidmore single reloaded the bases to put the winning run at the plate. Coleman though was able to induce an infield pop-up to close out the game.

Coleman finished with a line of seven innings pitched, allowing one earned run on six hits with one walk and one punchout. Offensively, Pearson led the way, going 3-4 with two runs scored.

In the second game, Clarkson scored early and often en route to a 14-4 victory. Clarkson scored three runs in the top half of the first and three in the second. Skidmore kept the game close with two runs in the first and another in the second.

Clarkson's offense soon began to pull away. A two out, two RBI single for Pearson in the fourth made the score 8-3. Another run in the sixth, this time on a sacrifice fly by Chris Miller again increased the lead. Then in the eighth Miller put an exclamation point on the game. With Coleman and Greg Jasek on base, Miller ripped a home run to right field. It was the third home run of the season for Miller, a team-high.

Skidmore got one run in the bottom of the eighth, but a Coleman single that scored Knauf in the ninth was quickly followed by Miller getting hit by a pitch to score Padrazo. That was the seventh RBI of the game for Miller, the most by a Clarkson player during Jim Kane's coaching tenure.

Mike Bubniak started the game and earned his second win of the week. He allowed four runs and 11 hits in seven and one third innings. Andrew Smith pitched a scoreless one and two thirds innings with two strikeouts. Miller finished 3-3 with a walk and seven runs batted in. Coleman was 3-5 and scored four runs.

Clarkson will next travel to Union for a four game series, starting next Saturday.
