The vagaries of the game of soccer were apparent as Cortland's Bridgett DeSantis scored 2:45 into overtime to give the Dragons a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence in a non-league game at Cortland on Tuesday night.
St. Lawrence dominated the game, but couldn't crack the scoreboard as Cortland came away with the win, scoring on one of its few good opportunities of the game.
DeSantis collected a through pass from Stacey Wood and went one-on-one with Saint goalie Abbie van Geldern early in the overtime period to score the game's only goal.
"Our team played extremely well tonight," said Saint coach Franco Bari. "I am really pleased with our performance, and it was one of the best games we have played thus far this season. Unfortunately, we had trouble finishing and Cortland capitalized on what was in my mind its only real good scoring chance of the game."
The Saints outshot Cortland 24-14 overall and 7-5 on goal, but couldn't get one past Cortland keeper Pam Monnier, who made seven saves for the shutout win. Saint goalkeeper van Geldern finished with four saves in the game and the Saints had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cortland improves to 5-2-2 on the season while the Saints will take a 7-3-0 mark into a non-league game at Nazareth on Saturday.
