POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (5-5-1, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) scored three goals in the second period and went on to a 6-2 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (4-3-1, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) Friday night at Maxcy Ice Arena. Senior forward Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) scored a goal and recorded an assist for the Bears and senior forward Nick Zappia (Manlius, N.Y./Kingston Voyageurs) lead the charge for the Red Dragons with two goals and an assist.

Potsdam put the pressure on freshman goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) in the first period shooting 19 times, but Cortland prevailed in the scoring department. At 6:32, Zappia scored a power-play goal off a pass from freshman forward Darren McCormick (West Seneca, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) to put Cortland up 1-0. Nearly five minutes later, freshman forward Tommy Nolan (Mahopac, N.Y./Connecticut Oilers) tacked on another goal for Cortland. The Red Dragons took the 2-0 goal advantage into the break.

The Bears opened the scoring in the second period when Simon buried a pass from junior forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) and senior forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta Jr. Knights) just 53 seconds into the stanza. Shortly after, Cope and Simon set up junior forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenal River Brown Bears) to tie the game at 2-2. Just over 30 seconds later, Cortland took the lead back with a power-play goal from junior defenseman Ryan Wagner (Buffalo, N.Y./Aberdeen Wings). Tough play continued the rest of the period, while the Red Dragons tallied two more goals from junior forward Michael Markowitz (Staten Island, N.Y./NY Bobcats) and Zappia to close out the second leading 5-2.

Each team exchanged penalty after penalty in the third stanza as Cortland added one more goal to their total from sophomore forward Casie Garrison (Cortland, N.Y./Philadelphia Revolution) with helpers from freshman forward Dan Broderick (White Plains, N.Y./New York PAL Islanders) and Zappia at the 13:00 mark.

Junior goalie Jon Hall (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit) finished with 12 saves in the first 35 minutes. Hall was replaced by junior goalie Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) who made 15 saves out of 16 shots in the remaining 25 minutes of the game. Weigman recorded 54 saves in the victory.

The Red Dragons were 4-11 on the man-advantage, while the Bears were 1-10.

Potsdam is back tomorrow at Maxcy Ice Arena when they face #8 Oswego State Lakers at 7 p.m.
