(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Lyndsay Coppola (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) blasted a three-run home run helping the SUNY Canton softball team beat SUNY Potsdam 8-0 in five innings on Thursday.
The Roos, who dropped the first game 4-1, have won five of their last six games and moved to 6-12 overall.
Coppola's team-high third home run of the year came in the top of the fourth inning with the Roos holding a 3-0 lead. Colleen Rivers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) ripped a double and Emiley Walters (Lancaster, N.Y.) got on safely with a walk and then Coppola launched a line drive that cleared the left field fence.
SUNY Canton had gained a 1-0 advantage at the end of one inning after Coppola drew a lead-off walk in the top of the first and then crossed home plate when Carolina Olivares (Adelanto, Calif.) ripped her first of two doubles in the nightcap to bring her home.
The Roos lead grew to 3-0 after three innings. Coppola was hit by a pitch in the top of the third inning and Vickie Lynch (Howard Beach, N.Y.) drew a walk and both players came home on Olivares' team-leading ninth double of the year.
The Roos tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning to shorten the game to five innings. Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) reached first on a Bears' error and eventually ended up at second base. Lottie then came home when Danielle Callahan (Kingston, N.Y.) ripped a single up the middle. Rivers then cracked her second double of the game plating Callahan for the final run of the game.
Jessica Measheaw (Hammond, N.Y.) notched her first shutout in a Roos' uniform as the sophomore limited the Bears to just two hits. Measheaw struck out three batters and didn't allow a walk in five innings. Measheaw was backed up by a solid defensive effort that forced the Bear to go three-and-out in three of the five innings.
In the first game, Lynch scored the Roos only run in the fifth inning when she got on with a walk, advanced a base on a wild pitch, and then scored when Olivares lofted a high fly ball to the outfield that was misplayed by the Bears.
Coppola and Jenifer Shaw (Helendale, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 to lead the Roos at the plate. Tina DeLuca (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound as the sophomore surrendered eight hits and one walk with one strikeout in six innings.
Jessica Brower doubled in the second game for SUNY Potsdam and Brittany Pawlowski had a two-run double and gave up six hits on the mound in the first game. Allison Breivogel also had two RBIs for the Bears.
