Clarkson women's hockey suffers sweep in Central NY

Posted

The always-challenging road trip to Central NY proved too much to overcome this season for Clarkson University as the Golden Knights lost their second straight game over the weekend, falling at 7th-ranked Cornell, 3-1 at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. On Friday, the Green and Gold lost 4-1 to Colgate in Hamilton, NY.

The third-ranked Knights stand at 12-4 overall and are .500 in ECAC Hockey play at 3-3. Clarkson closes out the play before the exam/holiday break with a home-and-home series vs archrival St. Lawrence this coming weekend. Clarkson plays the Saints in Canton on Friday before hosting their North Country neighbor at Cheel Arena on Saturday. Both games are 3:00 p.m. face offs.

Clarkson suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since October 14-15, 2016 when it was swept by Wisconsin (3-2ot, 4-1) at Cheel Arena. The Green and Gold lost consecutive games in ECAC Hockey play for the first time since 2011 when they fell at home to Harvard (2-1ot) on October 29 and lost at Union (2-1) on November 4.

The Knights' high-powered offense, which entered the weekend, averaging an NCAA-leading 4.36 goals per game, was stymied on the road trip with just two goals for their efforts.

Cornell took advantage of five power-play opportunities in Saturday's hard-fought game, scoring twice on the man-advantage for the difference in the contest. The Knights did not score on their lone power play.

The Big Red outshot Clarkson 34-20 in a game, which saw potential goals waved off for both teams for goaltender interference.

Madlynne Mills opened the scoring for Cornell with a power-play tally at 15:57 of the first period.

The Knights tied the game with 10.8 seconds remaining in the middle frame. The nation's leading scorer, junior left wing Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) battled for a loose puck in the crease and poked in her 14th goal of the year to tie the game 1-1. Linemates, sophomore right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) and junior center Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Rep.) assisted.

That was it, however, for the Green and Gold.

Another power play score, this time by Jamie Bourbonnais at 8:07 of the third period proved to be the game winner for the home team.

Cornell sealed the victory, snapping a five-game losing skid in the series, with an empty-net goal by Kristin O'Neill with 37 seconds remaining.

Kassidy Sauve faced a busy night in the Clarkson crease, making 31 saves.
