Clarkson men's soccer's late comeback falls short

A late comeback fell just short, as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team lost 2-1 to Skidmore on Saturday on Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson's record now stands at 6-7-1 and 1-3-0 in the Liberty League while Skidmore is 7-4-2 and is 1-2-0 in conference play.

Both teams came into the game needing a win to jumpstart their playoff chances. Neither would be able to score in the first half, but just two minutes into the second half, Skidmore would break the deadlock. The Thoroughbreds won a corner kick and leading scorer Adam Beek's cross landed at the feet of Brock Bakewell who placed it into the lower corner for his sixth goal of the year.

The two teams would trade chances throughout the half. Unfortunately for Clarkson, with eight minutes left in the game, their starting keeper Michael King (Verona, N.J.) was injured and was unable to continue. Sophomore Alex White (Unadilla, N.Y.) came on the field for his first minutes in goal this season. Just two minutes later, Nick Masiero collected the ball behind the defense and chipped over an onrushing White to double Skidmore's lead.

With only six minutes left, Clarkson desperately pushed forward to try to get back into the game. Eric Herberger received the ball on the right side and crossed along the ground where Alex Vozzella (Boston, M.A.) was there to tap it in. This saw a frantic final three minutes with Clarkson trying to tie the game. Unfortunately, a final scramble inside the Skidmore box was cleared away as the final whistle blew.

Clarkson will look to get back on the winning side when they host Vassar next Friday at 4:00 pm and then Bard College will come to town for a 2:00 pm game on Saturday.
