Clarkson junior Borowiecki signs professional contract with Ottawa Senators

Mark Borowiecki’s collegiate career as a Golden Knight is over after the junior defenseman signed a two-year entry-level contract with his hometown Ottawa Senators, foregoing his final year of eligibility with the Clarkson University Hockey team. The Kanata, ONT native will report to the American Hockey League's Binghamton Senators on an amateur tryout agreement to conclude the season.

"We are pleased for Mark and wish him nothing but the best," stated Clarkson head coach George Roll. "We think it is the right decision for him, but obviously it is a tough loss for us. Mark made a huge impact on our program. He played a lot of minutes for us and we relied upon him in so many situations, power play, penalty killing and 5-on-5. Mark battled every shift and competed as hard as any player we have had here. It reflects highly on our program that we can attract players of Mark's caliber. After seeing his development here at Clarkson, I am certain Mark will have a long and successful pro career."

The mainstay of the Knights’ defense the past three seasons, Borowiecki served as Clarkson’s captain this past season. Through 99 career games, the 6-1, 206-pound rearguard recorded 32 points on 12 goals and 20 assists, and posted 165 penalty minutes. A defensive-defenseman, he tied for the Knights’ scoring lead from the blueline this year with 11 points on three goals and eight assists through 31 games, and finished with 67 penalty minutes. Borowiecki scored three power-play goals in 2010-11 and netted the game-winner in Clarkson’s 3-1 win at Brown on January 22. He was hampered by injuries down the stretch and missed five games in February with a severely bruised foot.

Borowiecki, 21, was selected by Ottawa in the 2008 National Hockey League Draft, going in the fifth round with the 139th pick.

The first Ottawa native ever drafted by the Senators, Borowiecki participated the past three summer's in club's summer development camp.
